Space Maintainers

Preserving Room for Adult Teeth

When your child’s primary/baby teeth are lost prematurely, it is extremely important to ensure that neighboring teeth do not drift into the empty space. There are many reasons why children can lose their baby teeth earlier than expected, including severe decay, dental overcrowding, infection, or dental trauma. At Olive Tree Pediatric Dentistry, we provide custom space maintainers to help overcome this problem and keep your child’s smile on track. Our Board-Certified pediatric dentist in Miami Lakes, FL, Dr. Maidelys Oliva, has a wonderful way with children and knows exactly how to make them feel completely comfortable and calm during their visits.

The Importance of Guiding Future Growth

Dental space maintainers are specialized appliances created and carefully placed to preserve the exact right amount of room for your child’s permanent teeth to eventually erupt and grow into correctly. The early loss of baby teeth can negatively affect the proper development of both the upper and lower jaws if left unaddressed. Common causes of this premature loss of primary teeth include congenital defects, unexpected dental trauma, advanced decay, or underlying dental disease. Because of these potential risks, we highly recommend professional monitoring of baby teeth shedding and adult teeth eruption to prevent any future chance of severe teeth misalignment or complicated bite issues.

Types of Custom Dental Appliances

Space maintainers can be designed as either fixed or removable appliances, depending entirely on your child’s specific needs. During your consultation, we will carefully assess the space and determine exactly what type of device is required to achieve the best results. Dr. Oliva specializes in placing all types of highly effective space maintainers, including band and loop devices, Nance appliances, and lingual holding arches. We will determine which specific design is perfectly suited for your child’s unique dental condition. The fitting involves a simple, painless procedure that typically requires no more than two brief office visits to complete.

Ongoing Monitoring and Proper Care

Once the new appliance is securely placed, your child will naturally take a few days to get fully used to how the device feels in their mouth. After this brief adjustment period, periodic office visits will be required for Dr. Oliva to closely monitor the appliance and the surrounding gums. This ongoing supervision is incredibly important to ensure the space maintainer remains in excellent condition and to closely track the proper, healthy development of the incoming permanent teeth. Once the permanent tooth begins to erupt the space maintainer will be removed by pediatric dentist.
