Olive Tree Pediatric Dentistry
If your child has tooth discomfort, you should not take it lightly. Timely dental treatment is recommended to prevent further pain and dental infections. Because baby teeth have thinner enamel, any tooth decay that is left untreated or undiagnosed can impact the nerve much more quickly than adult teeth. If the decay reaches the nerve of a baby tooth, specialized nerve treatment (pulpotomy) is required to save the baby tooth. At Olive Tree Pediatric Dentistry in Miami Lakes, FL, our compassionate team will carefully assess the baby tooth to determine the root cause of the continual discomfort and whether there is a need for nerve treatment.
Many times, children may have a dental cavity in their baby tooth that unfortunately goes unnoticed or is left untreated. Once the infection reaches the nerve of the tooth, there can be significant and ongoing pain. If your child experiences symptoms such as unexplained tooth discomfort, regular throbbing, facial swelling, food impaction, the appearance of a small pimple on the gums, or noticeable grey tooth discoloration, you should immediately reach out to our office. Prompt attention is crucial to preventing the infection from spreading and ensuring your child’s smile remains as healthy and comfortable as possible.
Prior to completing nerve treatment on a baby tooth, Dr. Maidelys Oliva will conduct a thorough symptom assessment and take a radiograph of the affected baby tooth. If the baby tooth is restorable then a baby root canal will be completed.
When performing nerve treatment at our kid-friendly clinic, Dr. Maidelys Oliva will expertly and gently remove the infected pulp tissue after numbing the area with local anesthesia. This procedure is called pulpotomy. After removal of the damaged pulpal tissue a bioactive, biocompatible dental material is placed inside the nerve chamber and crown is cemented to protect the baby tooth.
After the procedure is complete, your child may experience slight, temporary discomfort as their mouth heals, which is a completely normal part of the process. Our team will provide you with all the necessary guidance to ensure a smooth recovery. It is highly recommended to maintain proper, consistent daily dental care and attend routine dental checkups. As a Board-Certified pediatric dentist, Dr. Oliva is dedicated to preventing dental caries and providing minimally invasive techniques, ensuring your child receives the safest and most effective restorative care possible.
