Infant Dental Exams

Infant Dental Exams

Early dental care and the implementation of proper practices can positively impact your child’s oral health from the very beginning. An early infant dental assessment is highly important for optimizing oral health and preventing potential oral diseases before they start. At Olive Tree Pediatric Dentistry, Dr. Maidelys Oliva is dedicated to being a top-rated pediatric dentist in Miami Lakes, FL, providing a compassionate and child-centered environment. We specialize in all areas of pediatric dentistry, including specialized, gentle dental care specifically tailored for the unique needs of infants.

What to Expect in an Infant Dental Exam

Children should get their first dental exam within six months of the eruption of their first tooth, and this examination should occur no later than their first birthday. When you visit our office, you can expect a comprehensive approach starting with a thorough medical review, followed by an intraoral and extra-oral examination of the tissues to assess any potential risk of developing oral disease. We focus heavily on educating parents about infant oral health by providing preventative guidance regarding dental development, non-nutritive sucking habits, fluoride status, teething, and proper oral hygiene routines. During this visit, we also create a plan for periodic dental reevaluation and map out comprehensive care based on pediatric oral health schedules. Dr. Oliva will conduct a careful examination of your child’s overall dental growth and development, looking closely for any signs of plaque buildup, white spot lesions, gingivitis, carious lesions, decalcifications, or any signs of trauma.

Preparing for the Dental Examination

Before the dental examination begins, our welcoming team will advise you about your child’s likelihood of crying, which is a completely normal and expected response for infants. In fact, when babies cry during the examination, it naturally facilitates opening their mouths, allowing us to perform a quick and effective check. If they do not cry, we gently use techniques that trigger natural jaw-opening reflexes to ensure a comfortable and safe experience. During the evaluation we will use a technique called Knee to Knee. This technique facilitates the evaluation by allowing the dentist to easily see inside the your baby’s mouth. To familiarize your baby with the knee to knee technique we encourage you to practice it at home. An infant dental examination is an essential step in setting up a lifetime of healthy smiles. At Olive Tree Pediatric Dentistry, we recommend that your child receives an examination every six months to consistently monitor their dental development and address any signs of potential issues early on.
